After the premiere of her hair-centric music video “The Subway,” which ends with her cutting her ultra-long hair, Chappell Roan posted on Instagram that she was desperate for a bob. “You do not. understand. how bad I want a bob now,” the Grammy winner wrote. It’s been a few months since “The Subway,” but Roan got the bob she dreamed of!
The musician is practically synonymous with her long, curly auburn red hair, so we had to do a double take seeing her at the premiere of Charli XCX’s new movie The Moment in Los Angeles. Said long hair was nowhere in sight; instead, Roan hit the red carpet with a wet-look bob tucked underneath her retro nurse’s cap—a bob that gave our millennial staff instant flashbacks to the pop-punk era and trying to mimic Hayley Williams’s iconic red hair. Roan’s bob was parted very deeply to the side to create a forehead-spanning side bang, which was slicked down with gel against her forehead down past the corner of one eye. Her short style ended just between her jawline and collarbone, keeping it firmly in “bob” territory versus “lob” world.

You can’t discuss Chappell Roan’s glam without mentioning her makeup, and this time, she incorporated bright shades of bubblegum pink on her cheeks and up to her temples, daffodil yellow under her eyes, and baby blue framing the bridge of her nose and diffused outward, under her browbone. The springy palette looked particularly pretty with the minty shade of her leather nurse’s hat and matching dress and the rich auburn-red of her hair.
Roan’s flowing, curly red hair may be her signature, but the star never shies away from a transformation, both onstage and off. (Remember her strawberry blonde incognito wig?) Roan is nominated for two Grammys for “The Subway,” so we’ll be tuning in to see if the bob (and those side bangs) pops up on the red carpet on Sunday!
