Whether or not nail art works on short nails is a matter of personal preference. Sure, some of the more elaborate looks do well on a longer patch of acrylic real estate—three-dimensional designs and intricate details can get a little crowded on shorties—but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of room for creativity when you’re sporting not-so-lengthy nails. And if you’re in search of your next nail look that barely extends beyond your fingertips, look no further than Demi Lovato.
The singer-songwriter attended the W magazine and Saint Laurent Grammys after-party at Los Angeles’s Bar Marmont along with other celebrities like Charli XCX, Rosé, Tate McRae, and Martha Stewart. The dress code appeared to be all over the place, but Lovato took it as an opportunity to look absolutely devastating in a dress with a lace bustier top and black, sarong-style skirt.

“Demi and I discussed after looking at their dress and felt pairing the nails with a simple nail silhouette of nude and black made sense,” nail artist Natalie Minerva tells Allure. “We decided on just doing a classic outline nail, and we ended up going with D’s natural nail length, which I personally love and prefer for a design like this. It’s such a simple but impactful design!”
Minerva posted a fabulous close-up video to give everyone a great view of the incredibly cool, undeniably versatile look, sharing that she used OPI Bare My Soul for the base color and OPI Black Onyx for the skinny outline encircling each nail.
