If we had to pick the signature hair accessory of the 2020s thus far, it would absolutely be the hair bow. Bows have been having a yearslong moment—or is it bow-ment?—in the styling spotlight, and now Margot Robbie has given them the Wuthering Heights treatment with a unexpectedly whimsical way to wear hair ribbons.

For a pre-premiere appearance to promote the upcoming movie, the Oscar-nominated actor blended dark romance with darling details. Robbie wore her hair down, parted in the center and styled in loose curls that began around her jawline. To give the simple style a touch of cheekiness, she added two ballet pink ribbons to the lengths, with one tied near her ear and the other cinching a tendril near her face. The bows are so subtle that you might not notice them at first glance, but they’re definitely there!
While the ribbons remind me of fashion-show looks from Simone Rocha and Sandy Liang, they’re also clearly tied (pun intended) to the film itself. Firstly, their loose, low placement makes them look like they came loose after a romantic entanglement with Heathcliff on the moors, which in itself is a nod to the film’s tagline, “Come undone.” And from what we’ve seen, the costumes in Wuthering Heights are equally fanciful and whimsical, including an opalescent, iridescent gown Robbie wears at one point in the film, and the movie appears to have a slight surrealist edge. Thus, the ribbons feel like an extension of the storytelling and world-building already established for Wuthering Heights. (But anyone who watched the Barbie press run knows this is second nature for Robbie and her team!)
Later that very day, Robbie attended the world premiere of the film with no bows or ribbons in sight, replaced by a truly gorgeous, dramatic (and massive!) low chignon that hugged the nape of her neck. Sigh… isn’t it romantic?
