It’s been nearly five years since Youth Group blessed us with new material with their brilliant album ‘Australian Halloween’ (see my review here), and even that album broke a ten year drought. While not exactly prolific (not helped by the geographical distance that existed between members), the band has not been idle in the intervening time, with, for example, singer/songwriter Toby Martin has undertaken a number of solo projects (including 2021’s ethereal ‘I Felt The Valley Lifting’, reviewed here) and bassist Patrick Matthews formed the delightful supergroup Victoria (see my review of their debut album here). It feels like Christmas here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia with the much anticipated news that the brilliant Underground Lovers are taking to the road for an anniversary tour with the wonderful Youth Group. And, continuing their reissue of past albums, the much lauded ‘Dream It Down’ will be issues in vinyl for the first time. celebrating 30 years since its release. With singles ‘Losin’ It’ and ‘Las Vegas’, this was the entry into an approximation of mainstream success for the band and the rest of the album displayed a growing sophistication in terms of the indelible pop melodies and layered ethereal sounds.
