What It’s Like Having Psoriasis: Personal Essay
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, around 125 million people have psoriasis — that’s two to three percent of the population — including me. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder whereby the immune system is overactive and produces new skin cells at an abnormally rapid rate. New skin cells typically take about a month to form and shed, but for those with psoriasis, new cell development can happen in as little as three days and the shedding process doesn’t take place. This results in thick, scaly patches of skin that can itch and burn, as well as crack, bleed, and peel. The cause of psoriasis isn’t clear, and there is no…

Millie Manders and The Shutup – Wake Up, Shut Up, Work – Backseat Mafia
This lady and this band aren’t one to fuss or mess about, and the first track, ‘Angry Side’, is just that. The vibrant, sharp vocals of Manders relay this confessional track over a bed of garage punk punctured by some great drumming. The rhythmic, melodic moments are great from here on out. Tasty guitar solos, as shown on this track, but also clever use of the band’s brass section. Bass-led ‘Windows’ uses the band’s brass section to great strength, the same as ‘One The Got Away’ with short bursts to puncture the chorus. ‘Shut Your Mouth’ comes across a bit like a heavy Kate Nash, such is the vocal attitude.…

Brooke Combe – Dancing At The Edge Of The World – Backseat Mafia
Following her breakout in 2023, which saw her debut mixtape, Black Is The New Gold, shortlisted at the Scottish Album Of The Year Awards, Brooke Combe returns with her new single, ‘Dancing At The Edge of The World, ‘ taken from her forthcoming debut album. Combe comments: “I wrote this after parting ways with a major label. After feeling like I wasn’t able to pursue creating music and lyrics that I felt strongly about, I ended up with a lot of self doubt and felt as though I was jumping through hoops for people that weren’t actually performing these songs themselves,” She continues “It was quite a crucial point in…

The Jesus and Mary Chain eviscerate The Enmore Theatre, Sydney, supported by Merryn Jeann, 01.08.2024 – Backseat Mafia
It’s been quite a week for seeing my favourite bands, with the magnificent Underground Lovers in Melbourne last Saturday and now on a Thursday night, the legendary Jesus and Mary Chain (JAMC) graced the stage of the spectacular Enmore Theatre in Sydney. Of course the Enmore Theatre must be listed as the third act tonight – a magnificently decorated Art Deco venue that provides the perfect platform in a stately, graceful manner. Support for JAMC was Merryn Jeann who provided the most ethereal and sublime music, preceded by a graceful ballet performance introduction from Jeann. Jeann’s music was a gorgeous blend of Cocteau Twins and elements of Kate Bush, P.J…

Dread FM – Who Killed The Vibe? – Backseat Mafia
Genre-jumping rapper Dread FM has made a strong impression since bursting onto the scene, receiving early support from BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio X. Now, with the release of his hotly anticipated debut album ‘Who Killed The Vibe?’, the solo artist offers a body of work full of brilliant, varied musical ideas, expressive performances, and high-octane energy. Opening with the trumpet samples of ‘The Hit’, Dread’s pointed, urgent flow soon takes over, displaying the rhythmic and energetic style that drives the album. Gradually introducing punching beats and the deep, fuzzy live bass that characterizes Dread’s sound, the track continues to build a thick and intriguing sound, as comparable to…
