Ryan Murphy\u2019s fever dream adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis\u2019 The Shards<\/em> is packed with requisite \u201980s signifiers: absent parents, early-MTV bangers, Satanic Panic-fueled serial killers, and, of course, a homecoming queen makeover.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s a fall not a spring\u2014she\u2019ll need warmer undertones. But I do<\/em> like what you\u2019ve done with the hair,\u201d says former Indiana beauty queen Liz (Evan Rachel Wood), offering backhanded approval to her lookalike daughter Debbie (Hayes Warner) and her styling skills ahead of a pivotal\u2014and shocking\u2014homecoming court coronation in episode six. Liz\u2019s straight bangs and blonde lob feel severely glam\u2014and nod to Michelle Pfeiffer\u2019s Elvira Hancock in the 1983 crime epic Scarface<\/em>, a Murphy request.<\/p>\n \u201cThat hair is also very iconic from the \u201980s,\u201d says hair department head Valerie Jackson. \u201cIt was really fun to give Evan Rachel Wood something that she hasn’t really had before, style-wise. She was very into it as well. Every time we put that wig on, she instantly would be like, \u2018There she is, ready to go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Liz Schaffer (Evan Rachel Wood) and Rhonda (Ivy Wolk) after Rhonda’s homecoming queen makeover.<\/p>\n <\/span>FX<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n In the episode titled \u201cHomecoming Part One,\u201d aspiring actress Debbie and her high-achieving best friend Susan (Kaia Gerber)\u2014the presumed homecoming queen\u2014have conspired to divert the prestigious title to Rhonda (Ivy Wolk), a well-liked classmate and recently escaped kidnap victim (seriously, this show has everything). The first step in their master plan is transforming the free-spirited Rhonda with a quintessential \u201980s teen-movie homecoming queen look. \u201cYour beauty is maybe more\u2026 severe\u2026 maybe even feral,\u201d says Debbie, to a tentative Rhonda. \u201cLike in a European way.\u201d<\/p>\n For the series in general, Jackson explains that Murphy wanted to avoid stereotypical \u201980s looks, like shellacked claw bangs and aggressive perms, which also skew later in the decade. They did make an exception for Debbie, in a flashback, and Rhonda, who both sport still-polarizing crimped hair in earlier scenes. \u201cBut when [Rhonda] has her makeover and is going to be homecoming queen, that’s when you get to see more of a softer curl and a feathered bang.\u201d<\/p>\n To the dulcet tones of Lionel Richie\u2019s \u201cLady\u201d and armed with Miss Breck and Rave hairsprays and an array of curling irons from Debbie\u2019s ornate pink vanity, the best friends reassuringly soften Rhonda\u2019s straight-as-a-board bangs and long dark hair into a tumble of bouncy curls, twisted up on one side and tucked behind the other ear. \u201cSince Debbie and Susan are doing the makeover, her new style is a little more reminiscent of something that they would have worn,\u201d says Jackson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n![\"Evan](\"https:\/\/media.allure.com\/photos\/6a8f48f521199e8aadd46d3f\/master\/w_1600%2Cc_limit\/Shards_Ep108-RayM-00406r.jpg\"\/)
