Nicole Kidman has received countless accolades in her decades-long career, thanks to her chameleon-like abilities on-screen. (Who can forget that prosthetic nose in The Hours<\/em>?) Off-screen, though, she only wants to look and feel like herself.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve got to be able to walk a red carpet and feel comfortable,\u201d she says, \u201cfeel like myself and feel very free. If I feel too confined, that won\u2019t be good for anyone. That ability to feel free and normal in those really extreme situations, I\u2019m wired for that now.\u201d<\/p>\n It turns out that sense of freedom is not innate. It\u2019s something that has come with age to Kidman, who is 59. \u201cI started modeling at 14 and 15, and I started acting at the same time. I wanted to be an actress, but I was using the modeling to make money so that I could fund my acting,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople used to always say to me, \u2018When you grow up, you\u2019re gonna be so pretty. I was like, \u2018Huh?\u2019\u201d The backhanded compliments did their damage. \u201cI\u2019d look in the mirror and I\u2019d go, What does that mean? I wanna be pretty now. But I suppose I was a gawky kind of teenager.\u201d Kidman, 5\u201910 even then, towered over her peers\u2014\u201cI was all arms and legs, and I didn\u2019t have control over my body, in a way\u2019\u201d she says\u2014and lamented not having pin-straight, blonde hair.<\/p>\n Those early tests to her confidence didn\u2019t hamper her acting career; if anything they may have fueled it through an astonishing series of memorable roles. In 2026, she\u2019s had another busy year (the new season of Lioness<\/em> debuted this month, and the sequel to cult classic Practical Magic<\/em> is slated for release in September). She also fronts a video series, The Many Sides of Radiance<\/em>, a campaign for Cl\u00e9 de Peau Beaut\u00e9, unveiled Monday, for which she has served as a spokesperson since last year. For her work on camera, she says, \u201cI love the idea of creating a character. That\u2019s what makeup costumes, hair, all of it\u2014even changing the way you move, does.\u201d Those are nuances she\u2019s always been sensitive to.
